Ann Arbor
Ann Arbor is the county seat of Washtenaw County.  Supposedly named for the spouses of the city's founders and for the stands of trees in the area, Ann Arbor is best known as the location of the main campus of the University of Michigan.  It also boasts a major teaching hospital connected with the University of Michigan.

The city's economy, which was once noted for production of agricultural implements, carriages, furniture, pianos and organs, pottery, and flour, is now dominated by education, high-tech, and biotechnology. Average home prices and property taxes are well above the state and national medians. The city is also well known locally as a destination for dining out and entertainment, as it contains a wide and eclectic variety of restaurants and performance venues.

Ann Arbor is situated on the Huron River.  The landscape of Ann Arbor consists of rolling hills and valleys, with the terrain becoming steeper near the Huron River. Ann Arbor's "Tree Town" moniker stems from the dense forestation of its parks and residential areas. The city holds almost as many trees as residents, with more than 50,000 trees sited along city streets and an equal number in city parks. The city contains 147 municipal parks, ranging from neighborhood vest-pocket parks to large recreation areas, with several large city parks and a university park bordering sections of the Huron River. The largest are Argo Park, Riverside Park, County Farm Park, and Gallup Park (near the Huron Parkway), while Fuller Recreation Area, near the University Hospital complex, contains sports fields, pedestrian and bike paths, and swimming pools. Nichols Arboretum, which is jointly owned by the City of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan (known locally as "The Arb"), is a 123-acre preserve containing hundreds of plant and tree species on the east side of the city near downtown.

The Kerrytown Shops, Main Street Business District, the State Street Business District, and the South University Business District are commercial areas in downtown. Three commercial areas south of downtown include the areas near I-94 and Ann Arbor-Saline Road, Briarwood Mall, and the South Industrial area. Other commercial areas include the Arborland/Washtenaw Avenue and Packard Road merchants on the east side, the Plymouth Road area in the northeast, and the Westgate/West Stadium areas on the west side. The downtown contains a mix of 19th and early 20th-century structures and modern-style buildings, as well as a farmers' market in the Kerrytown district.

Ann Arbor's residential neighborhoods contain a range of architectural styles, from classic 19th and early 20th-century designs to ranch-style houses. More contemporary-style houses are located farther from the downtown district. Surrounding the University of Michigan campus are houses and apartment complexes occupied primarily by student renters. The 19th-century buildings and streetscape of the Old West Side neighborhood have been preserved virtually intact; in 1972, the district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is further protected via city ordinances and a nonprofit preservation group.

Ann Arbor’s climate is a typically Midwestern temperate seasonal climate, which is influenced by the Great Lakes. There are four seasons, with winters being cold with moderate snowfall while summers can be warm and humid. Ann Arbor's crime rate is below the national average. Compared with that average, the violent crime rate is much lower than the property crime rate: 50% and 26% less than the national average, respectively.

The University of Michigan shapes Ann Arbor's economy, both directly and indirectly. It employs about 30,000 workers, including about 7,500 in the medical center.  Other employers are drawn to the area by the university's research and development money, and by its graduates. High tech, health services and biotechnology are other major components of the city's economy, with numerous medical offices, laboratories, and associated companies located within the city. Companies associated with the automobile industry, also employ a large number of residents.  A number of high-tech companies are located in the city.  On July 11, 2006, Google announced plans to open a 1000-employee Ann Arbor office for its AdWords program later in the year.

Ann Arbor serves as the headquarters to several major companies. including Borders Books, Domino's Pizza, and Flint Ink Corp (in October 2005 it was acquired by Stuttgart-based XSYS Print Solutions). Another Ann Arbor-based company is Zingerman's Delicatessen, which serves sandwiches and Jewish foods, and has derived and developed a variety of businesses under different brand names.

Dexter
Dexter is a village in Washtenaw County.  The majority of the village is in the northwest corner of Scio Township with a small portion (approximately 200 homes) in Webster Township. The population was approximately 3,495 in September, 2006.  There is no political connection between the Village of Dexter and the nearby Township of Dexter, which is located to the northwest of the municipality. Both, however, were named for Judge Samuel Dexter, who, in 1824, became the first person to purchase land in what is now Dexter Village. Dexter is the birthplace of biologist, women's suffragette, and philanthropist Katharine Dexter McCormick. For current activities and information, visit http://www.DexterChamber.org.

Dundee
Dundee is a village in Monroe County.  The population was 3,522 at the 2000 census. The village is located within Dundee Township. Through a series of annexations and land transfers, the village has greatly increased in size over the past several years. Dundee is home to the third largest Cabela's store in the world. Cabela's is a large sporting goods store which has stores all over the country. Since Cabela's was built, many other businesses, restaurants, and hotels have been built in the village, including the family-popular Splash Universe. Cabela's and most of the restaurants and businesses are located at the intersection of M-50 and US 23. Dundee also has a historic downtown which offers many shops and a few restaurants. It is situated on the banks of the River Raisin.

Milan
Turn-of-the-century, two-story homes are prevalent. About one-quarter of the homes in Milan were built before World War II, and 21 percent built between 1940 and 1959. Since 2001, there have been a number of new developments including Eagle Springs, Glendale Farms, Uptown Village, and Meadowbrook, adding approximately 350-400 new single family homes to the City. There have also been some new condos built in this same period, Milan Crossing and Cherry Lane.

Despite the increase in development, Milan is still equated with country living. It's not unusual to find a home with a barn and a kennel sitting on a couple of acres outside the city limits, and a hand-built wooden organ factory is housed in a relocated barn tucked along the Saline River. The small town began to develop its industrial base in the 1960's. Currently, a great deal of its tax base is from the former Ford facility. Downtown Milan boasts a place on the National Register of Historic Places with fine examples of Italianate, International, Art Modern, and other architectural styles. One corner features a fully restored Fire Barn once used as a library, jail and as city hall over the years. It now houses the Visitors Center and Chamber of Commerce offices.

Milan is a typical fun small town which still boasts multiple annual parades, a summer fair, and some of the best fireworks in the county to celebrate the 4th of July.

Part of its present City Hall is the former Ford Power Plant used for the Village industries of the 1930's. It was rarely used for its hydraulic power despite the damming and creation of a manmade lake called Ford Lake. Instead, oil usually powered the enterprise. Saline
Saline is southwest of the City of Ann Arbor and northwest of the City of Milan, where U.S. 12 (Michigan Avenue) intersects the Saline River, a tributary of the River Raisin.

The city is popular for its annual Celtic Festival, which is known to attract people from all over the United States. It is also the hometown of the Saline Fiddlers and Fiddlers Restrung, two nationally-renowned high school bluegrass/fiddle groups. Saline, whose well-regarded school district is perhaps its biggest draw, is ranked the 42nd best place to live in the United States in a recent CNN/Money Magazine poll, and also made CNN/Money's list of best places to retire.

Before the 18th century, Native Americans travelled to the area now called Saline to hunt wildlife and gather salt from the salt springs they found there. In the 18th century, French explorers canoed up to the area and also harvested the salt. They named the local river Saline, which is the French word for salt. Europeans settled the area in the 19th century, most of them coming from England and Germany. For current activities and information, visit http://www.SalineChamber.com.

Tecumseh
Tecumseh is a small city in Lenawee County. It is situated on the River Raisin on M-50 just east of M-52. The city is surrounded on three sides by Tecumseh Township, but is politically independent. Founded in 1824 by Musgrove Evans, Tecumseh was actually the first town to spring up in Lenawee County due to his unique strategy. Theorizing that a new county would be created in that part of the state, Evans and the other founders of Tecumseh decided it would be best for their new town to be the county seat. Therefore, they first applied to the territory government for the creation of Lenawee County. They then created Tecumseh Township, and then the town itself. To others at the time, this procedure (and founding dates in reverse order to unit size) seemed quite odd. Evans considered it just right.

During most of the 19th century, Tecumseh figured little in the history of the region, but it was during this period that the residents of Adrian, Michigan, through making a higher bid for the construction of a new courthouse, stole the county seat from Tecumseh. Residents of both towns have never forgotten this.

The 20th century brought with it the main source of this small town's fame, Tecumseh Products. Founded by the Herrick family during the earlier part of the century, Tecumseh Products initially began business manufacturing refrigeration compressors. The company was wildly successful, and was largely responsible for the town's better-than-average survival during the Great Depression. Indeed, for some period during the middle part of the century, Tecumseh had the record for the most millionaires per capita of any city in the world, due to the fortunes made by the founders and early members of Tecumseh Products. While the company has receded somewhat from its former heights, Tecumseh is still known as the "refrigeration capitol of the world." Ypsilanti
Ypsilanti is bounded to the north by Superior Township and on the west, south, and east by Ypsilanti Township. Originally it was a trading post.  Later a separate community a short distance away on the west side of the river was established in 1825 under the name "Ypsilanti", after Demetrius Ypsilanti, a hero in the Greek war for independence.

The geographic grid centre of Ypsilanti is the intersection of the Huron River and Michigan Avenue, which connects downtown Detroit, Michigan, with downtown Chicago, Illinois. Since 1979, the city has become known for summer festivals in the part of the city called "Depot Town," which is adjacent to Riverside Park and Frog Island Park. Festivals include the annual Heritage Festival, the Elvis Festival, the Orphan Car Festival, a beer tasting festival, and a Latino festival.

A college town, Ypsilanti is home to Eastern Michigan University, founded in 1849. Today, EMU has 19,000 undergraduate and over 4800 graduate students.  The college is vital to the commercial landscape of the city and keeps the median age in Ypsilanti relatively low. Domino's Pizza was founded in Ypsilanti in 1960, delivering to students at Eastern Michigan University, although the corporate offices are now located nearby in Ann Arbor Township.

Ypsilanti has the largest historic district of any city in the state of Michigan, the most developed section of which is the old Depot Town adjacent to Frog Island Park and Riverside Park. It features many specialty shops, bars and grills, and a farmers' market. Other sites of interest include:
• Automotive Heritage Museum
• Firehouse Museum
• First United Methodist Church
• Highland Cemetery
• Michigan Firehouse Museum
• Pease Auditorium (on the campus of Eastern Michigan University)
• Starkweather Hall, built in 1897 as a chapel (currently housing EMU Graduate School)
• Yankee Air Museum
• Ypsilanti Historical Museum (housed in a Victorian-style mansion built in 1860)
• Ypsilanti Water Tower (built in 1890)
• Willow Run Airport - located in neighboring Wayne County, but home to Ypsilanti's weather station
